Thugs said to be "dressed in balaclavas with Rangers scarves" allegedly attacked football fans leaving Fir Park on Saturday.
The unsavoury scenes are said to have taken place at the Lanarkshire ground following a match between Motherwell and Hamilton's ladies' teams.
Those caught up in the incident were left "terrified" as many tried to dash back into the stadium in fear of violence.
Motherwell 's chief executive Alan Burrows says the club is investigating the matter and working with various bodies to identify those responsible, including Police Scotland.
Taking to social media, he apologised to fans present at the time and has called what happened "utterly disgraceful".
A number of reports on social media describe the culprits as wearing balaclavas and Rangers scarves, with many believing those responsible to be from affiliated Rangers fan group, the Union Bears.
One woman who was there with her two children as the drama unfolded, told Lanarkshire Live the masked men were "wearing Rangers logos".
She told us : "It all happened that quickly and I was focusing on my two young kids, but as we were leaving after the game, a group of about 20, all in black with faces covered, came running into the exit gates and start throwing punches to anyone who was leaving and in front of them.
"They then proceeded to set of a firecracker which was more frightening for the kids as well as us adults as we didn't know what it was."
The mum added: "Seen logos on the scarf things but didn't pay too much attention.
"My partner said it looked like the Rangers logo though, but again didn't pay close attention as our focus was on the kids he's a Rangers fan and heard everyone shout that's who it was."
Motherwell have since raised the matter with police and have passed them CCTV footage to help identify the culprits.
Today, a Police Scotland spokesman told us: “Following reports of disorder around Fir Park stadium, Motherwell around 5pm on Saturday, April 19, police have now received CCTV footage from Motherwell Football Club.
“Officers will review this footage and liaise with the club to establish the full circumstances.”
Further reports on social media claimed the Union Bears - who are associated with the Ibrox club - were behind the alleged attack.
One angered football described what happened as he feared for the safety of women and children.
Scott Anderson said the thugs were wearing Rangers scarves to cover their faces.
His post read: "Absolutely scandalous.
"At the end of the game, a good crowd of what looked like guys dressed in all black and with Rangers scarves wrapped around their faces so they couldn’t be seen, ran into and started attacking the leaving supporters that had been in watching the game.
"Women and kids running back in to the stand to get out the way of these utter brainless idiots."
A Rangers fan who believed the Union Bears were behind the unsavoury behaviour, took to Twitter to vent his anger.
Steven Harvey wrote: "I’m a massive Rangers fan, but what Union Bears done after the Motherwell v Hamilton ladies game at Fir Park today was an absolute disgrace - my 11 year daughter was caught up in it.
"Keep your fighting outside the stadium."
A post on Facebook by Andrew MacGregor read: "Union Bears (Rangers Fans) terrify fans yesterday at Fir Park at the end of the Motherwell vs. Hamilton Ladies game.
"Families with young children seen crying as they were exiting when they charged into the John Hunter Stand causing panic, fear and alarm."
Police Scotland have not confirmed whether they are looking at any one group in connection with the incident.
Union Bears were approached for comment, but as of yet have not gotten back to us.
