The killers of Argentina rugby star Federico Martin Aramburu are reportedly three right-wing extremists who are now on the run from police.
The suspected gunman has been identified in French media reports as a former member of a French far-right students' union.
A second man and a woman driving a Jeep are also allegedly on the run following the fatal shooting just after 6am on Saturday. The pair were captured on CCTV footage.
French outlet L'Equipe reported that the tragic incident occurred in Mabillion, a district in Paris when Aramburu and his friend became involved in a row with two other men at the bar.
The two other men are reported to have then left the scene only to return later on armed with a gun, which was used to fatally wound the 42-year-old.
Aramburu, capped 24 times for the Argentine national team and a former Glasgow Warriors star, was shot five times as he walked back to his hotel after watching France face England in the Six Nations with Hegarty. His killer is said to have fired at him from close range before fleeing on foot.
Former Argentine rugby union player Octavio Bartolucci told an Argentinian news website: "It was terrible to wake up to this after spending all night with him.
"A group of us including myself and former teammate Jose Orengo had gone out for dinner. We hadn’t seen each for several years and we had a great time.
"We were talking about our families and work and those things. We finished eating and went to a bar and another after that and then Jose and I decided to call it a night.
"Federico stayed on because he had to meet up with a business partner at a travel agency he runs that takes people to rugby matches who I don't know. We found out about what had happened the following morning."
He added: "I understand there was an argument about something and then the shooting happened but I don't know anymore because we had parted company around 2am that morning."
Amramburu debuted for his country in 2004, going on to play in the 2007 World Cup where Argentina sensationally reached the semi-finals where they were beaten by eventual champions, South Africa. During his club career, he turned out for Biarritz Olympique, Perpignan, US Dax, CASI and Glasgow Warriors.
He played 41 times for the Scottish side after signing in the summer of 2010. On Saturday, the club paid tribute to Aramburu following the news. "We are shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic death of Warrior #185, Federico Aramburu," the Warriors said in a statement.
