Police drop murder investigation after woman fell to her death at Bristol tower block

The death of a woman who fell out of a tower block window almost a year ago is no longer being treated as suspicious. Twenty-five-year old Shannon Beirne died after falling from the 13th floor of Lansdowne Court in Easton in April last year.

Avon & Somerset police initially launched a murder investigation after she was found dead in the early hours of April 19. This was later dropped as police said there was no evidence of third party involvement.

A former suspect, a 43-year-old man, who was initially arrested on suspicion of her murder was also released without charge. An inquest into her death was opened on June 17, 2022, but there is still no date for a final hearing.

Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Simon Dewfall, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “A team of officers and staff have carried out a thorough and comprehensive investigation following the death of 25-year-old Shannon Beirne in Bristol.

“We’ve spoken to in excess of 60 witnesses, including those who saw Shannon fall from the window, we’ve carried out a full forensic examination of the scene, have consulted with experts who specialise in falls, carried out house-to-house enquiries and have reviewed around 100 hours of CCTV footage from around the area.

“A review of all the evidential material gathered during the course of this investigation does not provide us with any evidence of third-party involvement in Shannon’s tragic death.

“We’ll continue to carry out enquiries on behalf of the coroner’s office ahead of an inquest.

“A specialist family liaison officer has updated Shannon’s next of kin, and our thoughts remain very much with all her loved ones as they continue to come to terms with their loss. A 43-year-old man who had been arrested in connection with Shannon’s death has now been released without charge.”

The latest update in the case comes as a new podcast episode from journalist Louise Tickle has been released that specifically focuses on Shannon Beirne’s death. The episode coincides with the release of the last chapter of the series Life in Lansdowne which is a joint investigation from The Bristol Cable and Ms Tickle’s Tortoise Media, which looked into the circumstances surrounding Shannon’s death.
