Police appeal as Cardiff City fans wreck Ashton Gate toilets during Bristol City defeat

Police in Bristol have confirmed no arrests have yet been made in their investigation into criminal damage at Ashton Gate Stadium during a match on Saturday.

Avon and Somerset police have issued an appeal for information about their investigation, and will be working with Bristol City, Cardiff City and South Wales Police to identify the culprits.

A large section of the ceiling of the toilets in the Atyeo Stand was pulled down in the first half of the game between Bristol City and Cardiff City, at around 1pm on Saturday.

The damage occurred in the stand occupied by Cardiff fans at Saturday's Severnside Derby match, which Bristol City won 3-2.

The scene inside one of the toilets in the away stand was filmed by Cardiff fans on their phones and shared on social media, as were pictures of the aftermath of the damage.

Later on Saturday, Cardiff City FC announced it was offering to pay for the costs incurred by Ashton Gate Stadium in repairing the damage.

Now, Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed a formal police investigation is underway, and that includes an appeal for information about what happened.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police said: “A police investigation has been launched following a report of criminal damage to toilets at Ashton Gate Stadium on Saturday 22 January.

“No arrests have yet been made.

“We’d ask anyone with information that could assist our inquiry to contact police on 101, quoting reference 5222018809,” she added.

Cardiff City Supporters' Trust chair Keith Morgan also condemned the incident caused by what he described as 'idiots'.

Mr Morgan said: "This is totally unacceptable behaviour by a small, mindless minority of Cardiff City fans that will now land Cardiff City with a bill at a time when finances are already tight.

"We apologise to Bristol City Football Club for the damage caused. We can assure them that it is not the way the overwhelming majority of Bluebirds supporters behave when attending games.

"We hope those idiots that caused the damage are brought to book both in the way of court action and by a ban from going to all football matches."
