Anthony Albanese is set to join Vladimir Putin and other G20 leaders for a virtual summit.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting the online meeting on Wednesday night (AEDT) as he wraps up his presidency of the group for the year.

The Indian foreign ministry said it expected the vast majority of leaders to take part.

China will be represented by Premier Li Qiang, while Russian authorities have confirmed the attendance of the president who did not go to the in-person meeting in New Delhi in September.

Mr Putin also skipped the 2022 summit in Indonesia.

After the September summit, Mr Albanese described the leaders' statement on Russia's invasion of Ukraine as "an extraordinarily strong statement from the world".

"Russia has to have gotten the message, that this is having a devastating impact, and that the world wants this war to stop."

The leaders are expected to discuss the Hamas-Israel war and humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Brazil will take over the presidency of the grouping on December 1 and host the 2023 summit.

Mr Modi has invited all G20 members including the chair of the African Union, representatives of the nine summit guest countries and heads of 11 international organisations.

The meeting is expected to start at 11pm AEDT.
