Plenty of pots left to stir for this retiring pollie

Despite a looming federal election, Labor's Graham Perrett is still in with a chance to be the MP kicked out of parliament the most before he retires.

The Queenslander has decided to call it quits after nearly two decades in politics and will step down at the next election, which is due by May 2025.

While proud of major Labor reforms such as the NDIS and pushing for family law changes, the crown jewel of his parliamentary career was giving Nationals senator Matt Canavan stitches in a touch footy match, he said.

He has been kicked out of the chamber more than 100 times but  he still does not hold the record.

"But there's six months to go before the election so I have my eyes on the prize," he told AAP.

His defence is that most of his offences happened under the speakership of former Liberal MP Bronwyn Bishop.

While his departure leaves parliament with a lower decibel average, it also leaves Labor with a headache in southeast Queensland.

His seat of Moreton was a marginal seat before the last election when he gained a swing of more than seven per cent.

The Greens are eyeing off the seat, which he now holds by more than nine per cent.

Pollster Kos Samaras said his retirement could pave the way for a Greens victory if Labor loses five per cent of its primary vote and the minor party boosts its primary by about the same.

"His personal support may indeed be about five per cent. Especially in a state like Queensland where incumbents do matter a lot more," he wrote on social media site X.

But Mr Perrett believed the seat was always a Labor-Liberal contest and implored the Greens to "come and try".

"I'll be backing the Labor candidate day and night to make sure they get over the line," he said.
