Tasmania's acting premier has pledged the world's biggest fight to ensure the future of salmon farming in a remote harbour where an endangered fish is at risk of extinction.

Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek on Thursday triggered the first step of a review of aquaculture operations in Macquarie Harbour, announcing two months of community consultation starting in December.
