Any iPhone-toting folks who feel jealous of Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra's camera hardware might be in luck. While nothing is set in stone, a new rumor claims that Apple may be testing a 200MP camera lens of its own. Though it's unclear which iPhone might get such a monumental upgrade.
This rumor comes from Digital Chat Station (DCS) on Weibo, citing supply chain sources. Apparently, Apple is testing a 1/1.12-inch camera sensor, similar to that on the Oppo Find X9 Ultra. That phone has dual 200MP cameras, with high-resolution main and telephoto lenses. Apple is, quite sensibly, said to be testing the sensor for the main iPhone camera.
Obviously, testing a camera lens doesn't guarantee that Apple will ever use it. DCS says this particular sensor will be commercially available sometime next year, so even if Apple decides to employ a 200MP camera on a future iPhone, there will be a long wait before we actually get to use one. So don't expect it on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, or maybe not even the 20th anniversary iPhone Apple is expected to release next year.
My guess is that this lens will likely debut on a Pro Max model in a few years. Since the iPhone Pro is slightly smaller, the 200MP camera's inclusion will hinge on whether there's enough internal space to fit all the relevant hardware. But, if that's the case, then I wouldn't bet on the camera being a Pro Max exclusive for very long.
As for the standard iPhone and iPhone Air, well, I wouldn't bet on them getting a 200MP camera lens in the foreseeable future. If that ever happens, I shudder to think about how much resolution the Pro series' cameras will support.
It'll be interesting to see how a 200MP camera lens affects the quality of photos produced by this hypothetical future iPhone, too. Resolution isn't indicative of quality, but iPhones are some of the best camera phones around right now. Plus, with Apple's unique photo compression system, such high-res photos might not eat up quite as much storage as you'd expect. Or, at least, that's my hope.
But since we're still a long way off seeing this camera come to fruition, there's not a whole lot we can do except speculate. For now, let's just focus on what Apple has for us this year, including the long-awaited iPhone Fold.
