Plans have been revealed to transform Cardiff Bay train station and construct a new station in Butetown. The proposals have been submitted to Cardiff Council by Amey Infrastructure Wales Ltd, and would see a new station being built for Butetown as well as the current Cardiff Bay station being upgraded.
The new Butetown station and the upgraded Cardiff Bay station would be served by "new electric metro vehicles," according to the planning application. It adds that the works would "provide for improved transport links" to Loudoun Square and Cardiff Bay. The proposals would see a new station constructed at Butetown, with a new entrance from Bute Street and further access from Lloyd George Avenue at the east of the site.
The planning application also says it is responding to the Atlantic Wharf master plan, which will see a 15,000-capacity events arena, a new leisure centre, including a cinema, and a hotel being built in the area. Cllr Russell Goodway previously said that the master plan will "see significant improvements made to the public realm and to public transport links to the Bay."
