New apartments with a roof terrace are planned for the city centre of Cardiff. Plans have been approved to turn the two upper floors of Poundland on Queen Street into new apartments, with two new floors set to be added to the building.
A landscaped communal roof garden would be created as part of the proposals. Permission has now been granted to turn the existing upper floors of the building into apartments, with the addition of two more floors to be added for 33 apartments to be created in the building.
The apartments range from studios to two-bedroom flats, with further proposals to create bin and bike storage in the building. Permission had previously been granted to convert the upper floors of the building in December 2020.

As part of the plans, 42 spaces for bike storage will be provided on the ground floor of the building, as well as bin storage for 33 flats. The apartments are just one of several developments in the pipeline for Queen Street, as the area saw the loss of a number of major chain stores following the coronavirus pandemic.
The St Andrews Buildings in the centre of Queen Street lost three stores over the course of nearly two years, with Topshop announcing it would not re-open its three-storey store in December 2020. Then came the announcement that the adjacent unit Zara would also be leaving the building in favour of a larger site at St David's shopping centre.
In August 2022, River Island also announced that it would be leaving the site. However, luxury fashion and beauty retailer Flannels has been rumoured to take over the building, combining all three sites into one flagship store. The retailer already has a site in Churchill Way off Queen Street but reportedly is looking to upsize.
Permission was also granted in July this year to convert another building on the street into serviced one and two-bedroom apartments with the introduction of a fourth storey to the building. The plans will see 2 Queen Street converted into seven apartments.
