A planning application has been submitted this week for a £28million housing development in Old Trafford. The proposals for Bold Street are from Homes for Trafford, a joint venture formed between Trafford Council and Trafford Housing Trust, part of L&Q.
The plans include 161 energy-efficient contemporary properties with a mix of homes including one and two-bedroom apartments, and two, three and four-bedroom houses, in a range of styles, sizes and tenure. The scheme will include 30 per cent affordable homes comprising 48 properties – 16 social rent and 32 shared ownership.
The site was formerly home to three high-rise tower blocks and the Seahawk pub. If approved, Trafford Council and Trafford Housing Trust’s plans will align with the principles of the Council’s Old Trafford Masterplan.
The applicants say it will help create a landscape-led residential development, which 'prioritises health and wellbeing, access to nature and sustainable travel'. There are also proposals for a café or commercial space for a local business or community group.
Ben Townsend, director of development at Trafford Housing Trust, said: “Trafford Housing Trust is committed to bringing forward housing in the borough and across the North West as we continue to tackle the ongoing housing crisis, and these new homes will go some way to supporting that ambition.
“If the application is successful the Homes for Trafford plans will regenerate a vacant brownfield site using carefully selected materials to create energy-efficient homes, supporting and creating new jobs locally during construction and throughout the supply chain."
He said residents and local businesses can 'have their say' on the development. Coun Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s executive member for economy and regeneration, said: “This is a fabulous scheme between Trafford Council and Trafford Housing Trust and a demonstration of our total commitment to delivering affordable, quality and sustainable homes to help address the huge housing shortage we face across Trafford. This scheme, if approved, will provide 161 much-needed homes as well as a new community and green space in the Old Trafford area.”
If approved, Homes for Trafford is aiming to start on site in early 2023, with a target date for the first occupation of the first home in early 2024.
