Piers Morgan has faced severe backlash after a heated row over a post made to social media about the English Women's National Football Team. The former Good Morning Britain host, 57, has been slammed online after sharing a tweet where he referred to the team as 'persons who menstruate'.
Shortly after the Lionesses secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Spain in a Women's Euro quarter final last night, he took to social media to share his congratulations. However, the message was construed by some as a jibe against transgender women in sport - despite there currently being no trans players in the England women's team.
The Mirror reports that the message which had four clapping hands emojis read: "The England persons who menstruate football team are superb. Well played Lionesses."
Piers' tweet received a flurry of criticism as one user asked: "Why can’t you just congratulate them normally?" Piers responded with: "Why can’t we call women women?"
Another user added: "Is it even okay to say that??? I’m finding it quite hard to accept" A third, wrote: "What an odd tweet."
Following a flurry after angered responses on Twitter, Piers posted: "I love virtue-signalling Twitter when it doesn’t get sarcasm. So amusing."
Piers' tweet also caught the attention of MP Christian Wakeford, who turned the air blue with his response. The 37-year-old MP, who represents Bury South, wrote: "Imagine being such a pathetic [SIC] that you can’t just enjoy things without using the opportunity to make it all about you. No one is stopping you saying women, stop pretending to misunderstand gender inclusive language & creating a hostile environment for Trans people."
Piers was rapid to respond to the MP, writing: "Forgive me if I don’t take lectures on language usage from a woke-ravaged foul-mouthed clown MP who defected from the party he was elected to represent [SIC]. But many thanks for your thoughts."
Christian then responded with a flurry of harsh words, saying: "If being woke is looking out for those more vulnerable than myself, when used by the media as a punch bag then I wear the badge proudly. Sacked from The Mirror, sacked from CNN and still crying over Meghan at night. No wonder you’re getting about 10 viewers a night."
This news comes after Piers was sworn at by a transgender activist during an episode of his Uncensored show in May earlier this year. The host invited guest Jame, who didn't care for sharing their identity, to take part in a debate regarding a protest outside the Emmeline Parkhurst statue in Manchester.
The interviewee is said to have attended the protest alongside Trans Rise Up - who were challenging a talk held by Standing For Women at the site. During the debate Piers said: "I have always supported trans rights to fairness and equality and I mean that sincerely."
But the interviewee dismissed his words with cursing language. Later, Piers explained: "My issue with the way this trans debate is going, is in issues like sports for example, where I think it’s very unfair that trans women should be competing against women born to female biological bodies. I have issues about safety for women, I have issues about other women's rights."
The activist interrupted with: "Piers shut up bro. What are all these dog whistles and talking points? Do you not understand the majority of women athletes do not give a [SIC] about trans women in sport?"
Piers then said: "If you keep swearing I'm going to have to cut you off."
