Piers Morgan demands Mikel Arteta is sacked after latest Arsenal failure

Piers Morgan believes Mikel Arteta should be sacked following Arsenal's 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United on Monday night.

The Gunners missed the chance to move back into the top-four as a Ben White own-goal and Bruno Guimaraes' late strike handed Newcastle all three points at St James' Park. It means Tottenham Hotspur currently sit two points above Arsenal heading into the final day of the season.

Arteta's side were in pole position to qualify for the Champions League before the north London derby last Thursday, but two consecutive defeats have put Tottenham in the ascendancy. Meanwhile, Antonio Conte's side have won their last two games - including a 1-0 victory over Burnley on Sunday.

Tottenham face rock bottom and already-relegated Norwich City this weekend, needing just a point to book their place in the Champions League due to their impeccable goal difference, while Arsenal take on Everton, who may still need a result to stay in the Premier League. It is looking inevitable that the Gunners will miss out on a top-four place and Morgan is not happy with Arteta, demanding him to be sacked.

He said: "Arteta should be fired. Instead he’s been given a new deal and massive pay rise. For abject failure. Utterly ridiculous."

The Spaniard only signed a new three-year contract with the Gunners on May 6 - with the club rewarding him for putting them on the brink of a top-four position. Fast forward 11 days and Arsenal have picked up just three points from a possible nine and are set to be pipped to a Champions League place by arch rivals Tottenham.

In an interview after penning the new deal, Arteta claimed reaching the Champions League this season would give him the platform to take the Gunners to the "next level". He added that the competition would help to attract the best players to the club as they try and challenge in multiple competitions next season.

Arteta's previous contract was set to expire at the end of next season, but the Gunners felt giving him a new deal would repay the faith after guiding the club to their highest points total since Arsene Wenger left. At the same time, Arsenal Women's boss Jonas Eidvall was also given a new contract.

Explaining why it was the right time to give Arteta a new deal, technical director Edu said: "I think the timing is perfect. I really believe the message will be a big lift to everyone.

"To the fans, to the club, to the players, to Mikel. It’s important to show everyone where we want to go as a club. We are going to face a big summer again and it’s important to have our manager here."
