Piers Morgan 'cringing violently' as he blasts Rebel Wilson's turn as BAFTA host

Piers Morgan has given Rebel Wilson some feedback following her stint hosting the BAFTAs on Sunday night.

The broadcaster, 56, took to Twitter as the show aired on BBC One to tell his followers he was "cringing so violently", as he watched the hilarious actress entertain attendees at the awards ceremony.

Rebel, 42, had the star-studded audience in stitches at the Royal Albert Hall, thanks to her quips about the critically-panned Cats movie, Prince Andrew and self-deprecating comments about her recent 5.5 stone weight-loss.

But former Good Morning Britain anchor Piers wasn't a fan - claiming if the Pitch Perfect star was a man, she would have been "shamed and cancelled" for cracking jokes throughout the evening.

"I’m cringing so violently watching Rebel Wilson attempt to host the #BAFTAs that I fear my eye sockets may explode," the dad-of-four tweeted to his 7.9million followers.

He didn't stop there, following up with a second musing: "Great to see Rebel Wilson cracking all the jokes that would get a man abused, shamed and cancelled if he cracked them. #BAFTAs."

Some of the star's fans agreed with his criticism - suggested comedian Ricky Gervais should be the next BAFTA host - but many claimed Rebel had done a great job throughout the evening.

"In one breath Rebel Wilson just joked about a Prince Andrew musical set at the Pizza Express and auditioning for the Cats sequel. Please let her always host the #BAFTAs," one approving viewer tweeted as the show aired.

"No different to Ricky Gervais hosting the Golden Globes. Australian and British humour is very similar," another told Piers, with a third adding: "Well I thought she did ok. I loved her extra prizes of golden bras. They could have had someone a lot worse."

Bridesmaids actress Rebel opened the show on Sunday night with a tongue-in-cheek revelation about her recent body transformation.

The Aussie star has shed over 5.5 stone over the last two years, previously saying her weight-loss has left her feeling "so much healthier".

"Everybody’s like, why did you lose weight? Well, clearly it was to get the attention of Robert Pattinson," Rebel joked with the celebrity audience at the 2022 BAFTAs.

"Just joking, guys. Seriously. I did not lose weight just for a guy. As if! I did it to get more acting roles."

She jokingly added: "Boy, I’m now so excited. I can play the non-funny love interest in an Adam Sandler movie."

Prior to hosting the awards on Sunday, Rebel poked fun of her much-talked of weight loss when speaking about her presenting duties, adding that she was "honoured" to be given the gig.

"It's going to be so much fun! I don't wanna put any pressure on this - I know I'm not going to be funny because I am no longer fat," she said.
