Phillip Schofield is heartbroken after not being able to officially say goodbye to This Morning on air, according to Piers Morgan.
The 61-year-old hosted his final This Morning show on Thursday, May 18 after weeks of speculation surrounding his fallout with Holly Willoughby. Phillip announced his departure from the flagship ITV show on Saturday afternoon and is said to be devastated about not being able to say a proper goodbye.
Hosting the show on Monday, Alison Hammond, 48, and Dermot O’Leary, 49, paid tribute to the star and described him as ‘one of the best live television broadcasters this country has ever had’.
Former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers said he feels 'empathy' for what Phil is going through after he suffered his own brutal axing from ITV in 2021.
Writing in his Uncensored column in The Sun, Piers defended Phillip following his ITV axe: "Phillip’s not the evil monster he’s being painted as, nor is he the angel his previously halo-clad reputation suggested.
"I don’t know the full story behind Phillip Schofield’s downfall, but where I feel personal empathy with him is over the manner of his sacking."
He added: "For ITV to not even give him the chance to say a proper goodbye to his large, loyal audience after 21 years struck me as needlessly churlish, and I know he’s utterly heartbroken about it because he told me himself."
This comes after Piers responded to fans' calls for him to return to ITV after the news broke about Phil's exit, but he said there's one thing standing in his way.
Taking to Twitter, Piers shared a photo of himself and Holly and tweeted: "Thanks to everyone suggesting I might replace Philip Schofield at This Morning in a Lazarus-like comeback to ITV. Unfortunately, there’s just one problem: I still don’t believe a single word Meghan Markle says!"
Phillip's friendship with former best mate Holly is believed to be in "tatters" after telling pals behind the scenes that he has been left "hung out to dry" with his This Morning axe.
