Pierre Gasly has Red Bull point to prove in Baku with AlphaTauri car 'in the mix'

Pierre Gasly was optimistic when assessing his chances of a strong result this weekend as he looks to prove his ability after his Red Bull snub.

Sergio Perez was given a new contract to continue to race alongside Max Verstappen until at least the end of the 2024 season. While it was much deserved for the Mexican, who has found strong and consistent form so far this year, it would have been a bitter blow for Gasly to swallow.

It all but ends his chances of securing a second chance with the top team, having failed to make much of an impression in his first stint. The pressure of the seat led to poor results and he was replaced after just 12 races, but his performances since have been excellent.

Gasly has caught the eye with AlphaTauri, putting in the sort of performances and getting the results which caused many to suggest that his second chance with Red Bull would only be a matter of time. The Frenchman himself has made little secret of his desire to move back up, but it is now extremely unlikely to happen.

The 26-year-old refused to be drawn on questions ahead of this weekend's action as to whether he would join one of Red Bull's rivals to secure a drive with a top team. But there is no doubting he will be out to prove that the team was wrong not to entrust him with the keys to a Red Bull for a second time.

Gasly feels like Sunday's race in Baku offers an ideal opportunity for himself and AlphaTauri after a tricky time in Monaco two weeks ago. "Coming to this weekend, we're a bit more optimistic," he said. "And also, after what we saw in Monaco, like sector two, these type of corners, we were pretty good there. It's a good start.

"Clearly, I think we are in the mix. We are not alone. I mean, I'm quite impressed with Alonso, I must say, and it's like the straight line speed they have. He is there. Mercedes is there obviously, and we know [Lando] Norris when it comes to qualifying is also always right up there. So I think we're going to be a couple of cars, but at least we are in the mix."

Gasly was once again in the top 10 during Saturday's final practice session, though team-mate Yuki Tsunoda found things more difficult. After ending Friday afternoon eighth fastest, the Japanese could only manage 16th the following morning in a less-than-encouraging sign ahead of qualifying.
