Picturesque Nottinghamshire village with 'pretty' countryside views and 'nice community'

Neighbours have shared what it's like to live in the 'pretty' village full of 'great history'. Shelford is a small village close to the A52 near Radcliffe on Trent which is loved by its residents for its picturesque countryside, old fashioned homes and proximity to the city.

With a few dozen houses in the village, there's a church, bus stop and pub The Earl of Chesterfield. The village is close to the River Trent, only a 20 minute drive from Nottingham, and can be easily reached by main roads, such as the A46 and A52.

Funeral care worker David Mason, 64, has lived in the village for around 12 years. He said: "Basically I used to come through here as I used to live on Mapperley Top, I used to bring the kids down when they were only five to the local pub and always just thought it would be a really nice to live here one day."

When asked what his favourite part was about the village, he replied: "The peace and tranquillity. There's no shops, just the pub and that's it."

A man in his 50s, who did not wish to be named, said: "The village atmosphere is very good, the people are very friendly and we've known a lot of people for many years. The village has a good community and history, if you look around the village there are plaques everywhere that will tell you about the village.

"It's nice to be close to the city, but the bus service is rubbish." When asked if there was anything the village needed, he stated: "A shop, because it would help you to buy basic stuff without having to jump in a car."

Business owner Ann Spaziana, 51, "loves" living in the village and everything about it. She said: "I've lived here just over three years and we came right at the lockdown time. I lived for nearly 30 years in Nottingham, we ended up coming out here and just loved the place.

"We loved the countryside aspect, we have sheep in our back yard. It's very quiet, very nice and has a nice community where everyone is quite supportive. I love the culture, I love the people and I love that people get involved with the church even if they are not church goers."

She continued: "I like that there's young people and families as well as people that are retired and a lot of dog walkers. It's definitely a dog village.

"It's a great area to walk, it's so pretty and we love it. There's just lots of great history."

A retired 77 year old woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "I've been in the village five years. Everybody knows everyone, if you get in trouble you can knock on anybody's door.

"Most people know me than I know them as I go out everyday with my dog and they see me go past. The bus service isn't too bad, the only trouble is there isn't a bus on Sundays.

"You really need a car I think to live here." Retired Jean Starbuck, 75, has lived in the village for more than 30 years after finding "a house that we wanted." When asked about the community in the village, she said: "Well not so much now as it used to be really friendly but now there are so many houses that have changed hands we barely know anyone now.

"I think it went five years of us here before a house changed hands, and we had a really good community but now it's different." Speaking about events being organised in the village, she added: "Years ago we used to have someone that ran the village really and that's what made it so much of a community.

"We've still got a parish council and we get a newsletter every now and then, but not like it used to be."
