Phoneutria Fera god rolls and how to get them in Destiny 2

Is it a shotgun? Is it a hand cannon? Well, it's both. Phoneutria Fera is one of Destiny 2's first shotgun-like hand cannons, blazing the trail for this new archetype.

Phoneutria Fera is one of many unique weapons introduced in The Edge of Fate thanks to the new Spread Shot archetype for hand cannons. It's the closest to a primary ammo shotgun, and since it fires pellets, it has access to a suite of new perks like One-Two Punch and Threat Remover.

Here are our Phoneutria Fera god rolls, based on perk data from d2foundry.gg.

  • Barrel: Corkscrew Rifling, Smallbore, Fluted Barrel, or Arrowhead Brake.
  • Mag: Flared Magwell, Tactical Mag, or Appended Mag.
  • First perk: Proximity Power, Threat Detector, Barrel Constrictor, or Slideshot.
  • Second perk: One-Two Punch, Swashbuckler, Incandescent, or Surrounded.

You can build Phoneutria Fera for a couple of different purposes. Our pick is using it to supplement our melee builds, particularly a Titan with Throwing Hammer and Synthoceps.

For that purpose, Proximity Power and One-Two Punch are our god roll. The damage buff from One-Two Punch is smaller in Phoneutria Fera than it is in special weapons, but you have basically infinite uptime for it as long as you're hitting every pellet in your shots. Proximity Power, on the other hand, gives you melee stat when getting kills with Phoneutria Fera while surrounded by enemies. That's the gold standard if you're using it for a melee build.

Barrel Constrictor, Slideshot, and Threat Detector are our backup choices if you can't get Proximity Power. Barrel Constrictor tightens your spread after getting a kill, which helps you burn through enemies more quickly and makes it easier to land all pellets for One-Two Punch. Slideshot is a good option to keep gunning since it refills your magazine on a slide. Threat Detector is almost a household name by this point, and since you'll be up close, this gives you some stat boosts when using this weapon. Lastly, Threat Remover gives you handling, reload, and stability with the same trigger as One-Two Punch, so it's a decent backup option. Still, for melee builds, aim for the undisputed god roll in our opinion: Proximity Power with One-Two Punch.

Using Phoneutria Fera as your workhorse weapon may take a different roll, however. Luckily, there's not one perk that's outright bad in its pool (Bungie could've applied the same principle to Submersion).

Swashbuckler is an easy damage boost, especially if you're consistently landing melee kills. Surrounded gives a slightly bigger damage buff, but only when you're near multiple enemies. We'd pick Swashbuckler over it, though Proximity Power/Surrounded makes for a great combo.

Frenzy is rarely a bad choice, since this catch-all perk boosts your weapon's damage, reload speed, and handling just for being in combat. It's not the biggest buff, but it certainly is a comfortable choice. To round out the list, Binary Orbit boosts your firepower when getting kills with the opposite element (in this case, Stasis, Strand, or Kinetic damage). And if you're just looking for more Solar synergy, Incandescent can help loop your Fragments if you're using a fire-based build.

All in all, there's quite a lot that may make Phoneutria Fera unique in its own right, but it's particularly deadly when used as a supplement to melee builds. Though this hand cannon appeared during an Arms Week event earlier in The Edge of Fate, you can get it by completing Call to Arms activities while the event lasts.
