Phillip Schofield appeared done with This Morning just minutes into the first episode of the week. The presenter was back at the helm of the ITV daytime show on Monday (November 21) alongside Holly Willoughby. And one of the things they were keen to discuss was the World Cup.
But in typical This Morning style, they have their own way of doing it. As England prepare for their first game of the 2022 tournament in Qatar against Iran on Monday afternoon before Wales takes on the USA this evening, Holly and Phillip wanted to get some predictions and entrusted Alfie with the honours.
And if you're wondering who Alfie is, it's a 'physic' alpaca. He appeared live on the ITV daytime show via video link from Oxfordshire "We're starting today with a look into the future," Holly confirmed before Phillip went on: "It's an odd time of year for this but the World Cup has begun and we've accidentally fallen into a bit of a tradition her at This Morning... finding way to predict the outcome."
"Yes, over the years we have put our faith into everything from asparagus and then the physic banana - still a personal favourite of mine..." Holly added before admitting to being happy to see the back of 'Mystic Marcus', a pig who had a good run of guessing the 2018 World Cup results up until the final.
But it was soon time to hand over to farmer, and Alfie's carer, Nick Laister, at Fairytale Farm. "He's always seemed to know a little bit too much," Nick said when asked by Phillip how they knew Alfie had psychic abilities. "He always gives you this telling look [of] 'I know a little bit more than you!"
It was soon time for Alfie's predictions and he had two options of buckets to get some food from, with one baring the England flag and the other bearing the flag of Iran. Alfie immediately went to eat out of a bucket that had Iran's flag on the front, with Phillip pleading: "Don't you dare!"
But he did dare and not only that, he dipped his head in and out three times, which supposedly means England will lose their opening game 3-0. Both Holly and Phillip were left disappointed by the alpaca's prediction, with Phillip covering his eyes in horror and Holly crying out: "Alfie no!".
"So things aren't looking great for England," Holly said to which Phillip interjected and said: "If you believe an alpaca..." Holly replied: "Which currently we do. We have no reason not to believe..." As Phillip argued Alfie hasn't got a good track record, he admitted: "I'm just trying to make myself and people feel that bit better."
Alfie the alpaca then predicted that Wales would lose to the USA shortly afterward. Holly covered her eyes as she cried out Alfie's name. "Let's see," Phillip tried to conclude before adding: "We have our results!" Holly added: "The alpaca has spoken... if Alfie's right, unfortunately, it's Iran to win and the USA."
Phillip bluntly replied: "Yeah... what a great day this is going to be." Holly said: "Happy Monday everyone," before Phullup added: "Lovely... that's a lovely way to to started the show." He then jokingly pretended to end the show and say: "We'll be back tomorrow, bye now!"
The hosts then laughed before thanking Nick, and Aflie for being on the show before pressing on with the programme. But This Morning viewers were commenting on social media. @BenPearce_ tweeted: "Psychic alpaca’s?! Have a day off #ThisMorning it’s octopus or nothing."
@Ophelia_ButtsUK posted: "I call this Alpaca World Cup prediction utter rubbish #ThisMorning." @Janeg6744Graham added: "#ThisMorning do people really believe that Alfie the Alpaca can really decide who is going to win the England Iran game. all Alfie see's is food. you could say he decided who was going to lose."
