Phillip Schofield has revealed he fears being spat on in the street since admitting he had an affair with a younger colleague.
The former This Morning star, 61, resigned from ITV last week and was dropped by his talent agency, YMU, after admitting having an “unwise, but not illegal” relationship with a younger male colleague.
The veteran broadcaster later admitted lying to ITV colleagues, including Holly Willoughby, saying he did it to protect the man he had an affair with.
In a series of bombshell interviews, Phillip has revealed the impact it has had on his mental health.
The presenter said: "I do not know a time I will be able to walk out of the door.
“I don’t have any spirit. My friends tell me, ‘It will get better’. It won’t. Not now. Not this one.
However, he said he feels he "deserves it" as it is his "fault".
Phillip admitted he has never suffered any abuse in public before, but now fears he will be shouted at or spat on.
“Are they spitting on me because I had an affair at work and lied about it?," he told The Sun.
In his interview with the BBC, Phillip compared himself to Caroline Flack as he said he was 'broken' and had 'lost everything.
He has said he hasn't looked at any newspaper articles and no longer has any news apps on his phone following his announcement.
Phillip shared how his daughters Molly, 30, and Ruby, 27, “haven’t left his side”.
He said: “If my girls hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be here. Because I don’t see a future.
“How much do you want a man to take – and are you truly only happy when he’s dead? This is now Caroline Flack felt and it didn’t stop."
Former Love Island host Caroline took her life in 2020 at the age of just 40 after being accused of assaulting her then boyfriend Lewis Burton.
Comparing himself to his late ITV colleague Caroline, Phillip said he knew he had done something wrong and had "owned up to it", but felt criticism from trolls was "constant".
He said: “A friend texted me this morning saying, ‘Mate, this is relentless. What’s the agenda? When is this going to stop?’
“Someone said you’re being treated like Jack the Ripper and I haven’t looked at a single thing. That would be the final push.”
