Peter Lawwell in Celtic leadership chance as former chief 'leading candidate' for major Hoops role

Former Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell is the favourite to become the next chairman at Parkhead, according to reports.

Iain Bankier has announced he is retiring at the end of this year and the hunt is now on to ensure a smooth succession for whoever comes next. It's reported by The Daily Mail that Lawwell - who stepped down from his chief exec role last year after 18 years in the jobs - is the 'leading candidate' for the position.

It was reported last year that Lawwell held some sort of role at Parkhead as a director, having held a position on the European Club Association board since 2014, representing Celtic and wider interests of football in Scotland continentally. Bankier said of his departure: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the club I will always love, as chairman, for more than ten years.

“Our aim was always to deliver success on and off the pitch and, above all, to give Celtic fans a club they could be proud of.

"During this time, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many fantastic people who have had Celtic in their hearts and worked so hard for our club.

"I know the rest of the board will continue to seek the very best for Celtic at all times and will seek to ensure that Celtic maintains its position as the biggest and best club in Scottish football, as well as progressing as a force in European football."
