Peter Andre popped the question to Emily Macdonagh, who was pregnant at the time, to make sure that her parents knew he was committed.
The Mysterious Girl singer explained how everything became very real after he proposed and he realised that the pair would have to get to work on planning the wedding.
Writing in his OK! column, he said how he sympathised with Robbie Williams and Ayda Field, who had slightly different ideas on how to approach engaged life.
Peter said how Ayda admitted that Robbie didn't want to discuss wedding planning for a whole six months after he proposed.
She said how she even considered giving the Take That singer his ring back.
"I can totally relate to both of them in this situation. I remember when Emily and I got engaged. She was pregnant with Millie and I didn’t want her or her parents to think I wasn’t committed 110%."
"I wanted to propose before Millie was born. I thought once we were engaged we would probably wait a few years to get married, but naturally, within a week, Emily was looking at venues and wedding magazines.
"I was like, ‘Oh wow, OK, you mean like now?’. I guess that engaged does in fact mean engaged to be married, not engaged to stay engaged."
The couple got married 18 months later and it was a day that Peter said he would "treasure forever".
They recently addressed the 16-year age gap, after commenting on recent photos of TOWIE star James Argent, 34 and his 18-year-old girlfriend Stella Turain.
In his New! magazine column, Pete wrote: "Age is a different thing to different people. On paper, things can look a certain way but I think it depends on how you are with the person.
"I don't think I've ever felt an age gap between us and when you see us together you wouldn't feel there is."
He said how he and Emily also have a 16-year gap, and while there was a lot of talk about it at the start of their relationship, he insisted that "no one says anything" now.
