The Briefing

  • Eight of the 18 reservoirs Peru tracks nationally have already fallen below half their storage capacity, and Peru's official El Niño commission now places an 88% probability on an extraordinary coastal El Niño for October, with odds of 85% for November and 80% for December.
  • Nearly seven million Peruvians who depend on the country's 50 public water utilities face a growing risk of supply disruptions between late 2026 and March 2027 — a window that opens in less than ten weeks.
  • Sedapal has committed S/358 million to protect Lima's primary water source, but fewer than two-thirds of the utilities authorized to tap a combined S/1.322 billion in emergency funds had completed the required training as of early August.
