Anyone who uses perfume has likely kept the fancy bottles on display at home - but those who are guilty of this could have unwittingly been spoiling their fragrance, according to an expert.
TikTok star Emelia, known to her followers as Professor Perfume, urged people to "get your perfume out of the bathroom" in a viral clip that has since racked up over five million views on the platform. Sharing a series of photos of perfumes placed on top of bathroom counters, the expert claimed that "nobody on TikTok or Pinterest knows the proper way to store perfume."
She went on to explain that while the bathroom is one of the most common places to store perfume, the changing temperatures could be causing damage to the scent. "If you keep your perfume in the bathroom, when you shower all of the steam and constant temperature fluctuations are going to spoil your perfume a lot faster than if you store them correctly," she said.

Other common places to keep perfume around the home include on dressers or windowsills - but these are also a no-no, according to Emelia. "Store your fragrance in a cool, dry, dark place," she instructed, recommending inside a cupboard or drawer.
Professor Perfume also pointed out a more unconventional storage option that can help perfume "last for years and years" - keeping it in the fridge. The key to a long-lasting fragrance is keeping it at a consistent temperature, according to the experts, meaning that clearing a space in your fridge could be an ideal option.
The Perfume Shop seconds this advice, writing on its website: "Storing your perfume in the fridge is the best way to help it stay fresh, especially during the hot summer months. Sunlight, heat from radiators and changes in temperature can all destroy perfume over time, but when stored in the cool, dark fridge it can last for years."
The shop adds that keeping citrus perfumes in the fridge can prove particularly effective, as it not only helps them last longer - citrus notes are known for having a shorter shelf life - but maximises the impact of their smell too. However, the retailer warns against storing perfume next to any strong-smelling foods, and suggests placing the fragrance bottle inside its own container to stop it coming into contact with anything else in the fridge.
