Performer takes a stand after tiring of being sexualised for the male gaze

A Liverpool-based performer is taking a stand against being sexualised for her sexuality.

Rowena Gander, from Wavertree, has been on the receiving end of inappropriate questions about her sex life while at dinner events. The 33-year-old appreciates homosexuality can evoke curiosity from those outside the LGBTQ+ community but is wanting others to see beyond her sexuality - especially when it comes to her work.

The freelance performer told the ECHO: “I have been sexualised many times, in certain environments, I feel like I can’t hold hands with my partner because it will attract a lot of attention. People feel because I am a gay woman they can ask [inappropriate] questions about my life, the main one being ‘how do you know you’re a lesbian if you haven’t had sex with a man?’. It’s more common than you think and especially in environments where they shouldn't be asked. I’ve been asked that question whilst at a group dinner.”
