Pep Guardiola thinks that Julian Alvarez will allow Manchester City to return to a system that they have not been able to use for several years.
Having bested the Premier League for the last two years, Pep Guardiola now finds himself with not one but two goalscorers who specialise in being both clinical and prolific. Erling Haaland has wowed English football with nine goals in five games and Julian Alvarez netted twice on his first start this week.
Despite Alvarez being seen as a player to step in for Haaland, the pair were named in the same XI on Wednesday in the 6-0 demolition of Nottingham Forest to show the destruction they can cause when they play together. If it was a warning for the rest of the league, for Guardiola it was recognition that he can go back to using two strikers together in a way that he hasn't been able to since Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero were both undroppable going back to the 2017/18 season.
