An expectant mum has been left baffled after her pals 'recoiled' when she revealed the name she plans to give her daughter.
The proud parent was given free rein over the choice after her husband named their firstborn. But she nonetheless wanted something they both liked, and they agreed to go with a 'classic' moniker.
"We have both settled on Beatrice for her," the mum explained in a post to Reddit. "It's been a long-time favourite of mine, I love that it's a 'proper' name that's vintage, classic, and has no negative connotations throughout history. I find it a nice elegant alternative in a sea of Charlotte's and Florence's."
Unfortunately, the name has not been well-received so far. "People have recoiled when we have said her name is Beatrice. In a world of names like Ocean, Cove, Soul, and an abundance of Olivia, Florence, Mabel, and Lilys I'm surprised people are almost repulsed by a classic vintage name."
Thankfully, the mum said she won't let her critics dissuade her. However, she was keen to see if social media users found the choice is 'as odd' as those around her say.
One person reassured: "I love Beatrice! It's classic, upbeat, not overly used, has a great meaning, and has great nicknames! Definitely not odd."
A second said: "I don't find it odd at all. I find it weird you're getting that reaction! I will say I do prefer something like Bianca a for feminine B name. But Beatrice is very nice!"
But another thought: "I'm personally not a fan at all, but it's a classic and I don't see anything wrong with it objectively! Just hate the way it sounds." Someone added: "To some extent, you know Beatrice isn't a popular name, so you also have to know not everyone is going to love it.
"There's nothing wrong with it, and I certainly wouldn't actually recoil, but you'd get a generic/neutral response from me. But you'll also never please everyone no matter what, and Beatrice is far from the worst name out there."
