People in stitches as botched cycle lane paint job 'looks like an alien'

A road marking in Plymouth has been likened to a 'space alien' as a botched paint job has left locals in stitches.

Plymouth City Council admitted it 'doesn't look good' as the marking of a pedestrian has been compared to an extra-terrestrial from another world.

It's thought the paint job was done in 2021 but many have just started to notice what it looks like, poking fun at an 'out of this world' paint job.

John Stickland, a member of local group Plymouth Street Scenes first posted about the marking, near Tavistock Road in Plymouth, on Facebook and actually praised the paint job for catering to everyone - even aliens.

In John's post, he said: "In this age of inclusivity, it's heartening to see the combined footpath and cycle path on Runway Road, Derriford seems to cater for space aliens. Out of this world..."

He told Plymouth Live that he thought the marking may have been 'redone' by a fibre optic cable laying 'gang'.

In response, a spokesperson for the Council agreed with John and said it was perhaps not the most realistic interpretation it could have been. They added that the company responsible will be revisiting the site to make any changes.

In a statement, Plymouth City Council said: "Your reader has a point. It's not the most artistic likeness of a human or a bike but it seems it has sat there unnoticed for quite some time.

"We are checking our records and think this may have been there for some time – possibly back to 2021. When utility companies dig up pavements we ask them to replace like for like on road markings.

"We agree it doesn't look good and have raised this with the company responsible who have agreed to revisit this."
