Police want to hear from witnesses to an argument involving a 67-year-old motorist who fell to the ground in the altercation and was then hit by a passing car.
The incident happened near Canberra Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
The police believe there was a minor nose-to-tale shunt involving the 67-year-old. Both drivers got out and, according to accounts given to the police, some sort of argument occurred.
The man somehow fell to the floor and was then hit by a passing car. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police have appealed for anybody who saw the incident or who has dash-cam footage to get in touch.
The police statement said: "About 3.40pm on Thursday, November 7, police were called to an incident at the intersection of Palmer Street and Bateson Road where a 67-year-old man had been struck by a vehicle.
"The 67-year-old had been involved in a minor nose to tail collision immediately prior to this incident and was exchanging details with the other driver. During this exchange an altercation allegedly occurred, with the 67-year-old subsequently falling and being struck by the passing vehicle. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.
"Police are seeking to speak with anyone who witnessed the initial collision or the two men interacting immediately following the nose to tail collision. The vehicles involved in the collision were a white Holden Commodore station wagon and a red Holden Colorado 4WD utility.
