It’s that time of the year again where you can dress up however you like and no one can roast you for it! Yep, it’s Halloween season, binches, and we’ve conjured up a list of the most popular Halloween costumes in 2024 from goofy to slay.
IDK about y’all, but I really wished Halloween was a bigger thing in Australia. But despite the lack of spooky festivities, the girlies and I will always use October 31st as an excuse to look EXTRA sickening.
Although we go for the meme looks, we do pop a Google search to see what costumes are in demand for the year.
With Halloween 2024 closing in, the data for which costumes that’ll probably pop off has dropped on Frightgeist, which predicts the year’s most popular looks based on Google trends.
So, if you’re quickly scrambling for a spooky look, do not fret! Here are the top 20 Halloween costumes for 2024 based on Frightgeist’s data.
20. Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic The Hedgehog 3)
Starting strong with arguably the hottest Sonic The Hedgehog character (don’t judge me), Shadow the Hedgehog lands in number 20 on the Frightgeist list.
The spooky data collectors reckon this will be a hit on the streets as folks are seemingly doing research on the character, sussing if he’s a goodie or a baddie…
With Keanu Reeves voicing him, definitely a smooth baddie if anything!
If you feel like dressing as a baddie for Halloween, you can buy a bunch of Shadow costumes on Amazon. It’s worth mentioning that they’re mostly kids’ sizes, but with a bit of DIY, we reckon you could make it work.
19. Minion
In the mood to steal the moon? The Minion costume is perfect for you and your mates!
According to Frightgeist, search interest for “minion costume” is three times more than “Gru costume”.
While a Minion costume is pretty easy to DIY, if you CBF, there’s a bunch of fun ones that you can buy online from costuming shops and places like Amazon and Big W. Psst, the Big W one is inflatable…
18. Dune
When you think Dune costume, you probably think sexy, sandy, Burning Man vibes… but no. According to Frightgeist, it was the Dune popcorn bucket that was a ‘yuge breakout search.
I mean if you wanna dress up as that… go for it, I guess. You can find some Dune costumes online at places like Amazon, Etsy and eBay.

17. Gambit (Deadpool & Wolverine)
With Gambit — played by the lovely Channing Tatum in Deadpool & Wolverine — becoming a TikTok meme, I knew that he would be a ‘yuge source of inspo for this year’s Halloween.
Frightgeist says “gambit costume” reached an all-time high this year. If you’re gonna dress the bit, I better hear the accent!
We’ve struggled to find too many costume options for you, but there are a few floating around on Cosplay costume sites. Be warned though, they’re the real deal, so they’re exxy.
16. Delia Deetz (Beetlejuice)
DAY-O! Delia Deetz, AKA the most supportive stepmother ever, jumped back on the Google search radar following the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Frightgeist also reported that searches for Delia Deetz reached an all-time high in September when the movie dropped.
It feels like you could pull this one from your existing wardrobe, so have at it.
15. Anxiety (Inside Out 2)
According to our friends at Frightgeist, “orange and white striped” — which is similar to Anxiety’s sweater on Inside Out — reached a 15-year-high on Google following the sequel’s release. Which makes sense because the record-breaking sequel came out earlier this year!
This one’s so relatable, there are already a bunch of great costumes available on the Internet. We’d suggest either this one, this one or one of these.
14. Wolverine (Deadpool & Wolverine)
Naturally, with Deadpool & Wolverine releasing earlier this year, folks want to dress up as this superhero hunk!
Since Wolverine has been around for years, there are a bunch of costume options online, like this one from a costume shop, these ones from Etsy, and this one from eBay. It looks like they’re a hot commodity and are selling out quickly, so hop to it, mates.
13. Disgust (Inside Out)
Disgust — in my opinion — is the standout baddie of the Inside Out group. As shared by our friends at Frightgeist, folks who are searching for the “disgust costume” are also searching “green sequin dress” and “green leggings”.
That being said, you can also re-use the green for Wicked costume next year.
If you’re not going down the DIY from your own cupboard route, there are some official ‘Disgust’ costumes online at places like eBay, Etsy and Kogan.
12. Anger (from Inside Out)
Anger is definitely a fan-favourite amongst the Inside Out crowd so it’s no surprise that the beloved emotion made it on the list.

The best part about dressing like a singer is that they have a ‘yuge variety of looks to pick from. Might I suggest Chappell Roan‘s extensive amount of looks if you’re not feeling Sab Sab?

Although Frightgeist didn’t provide a little blurb as to why Dr. Doom takes the eighth spot on this list, it’s no secret that it’s made it on here.
Earlier in the year, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr would be returning to the Marvel Universe as this supervillain after playing the beloved Mr Stark for god knows how long.
It was a ‘yuge plot twist for the Marvel lovers out there.
Dr. Doom has a whole bunch of costumes floating around the Internet, just head to retailers like eBay, Etsy and Amazon.
7. Red (The Descendants: Rise Of Red)
I feel like such a Disney adult writing about Red and The Descendants, but Disney definitely slayed in putting together the whole Descendants franchise when coming up with costumes.
For normies who’ve never watched Descendants, basically it follows the kids of beloved Disney characters. In the latest instalment of the Descendants franchise, viewers follow Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts.
Following the release of the movie — titled Descendants: The Rise of Red if you wanna give it a geeze — Frightgeist reported that “who is red the daughter of in Descendants” was the top searched term.
This one probably lands more so in the kids costume category, but it doesn’t mean you can’t try. There’s some decent options on Amazon, eBay and this particular costume shop.
6. Envy (Inside Out 2)
Following the release of Inside Out 2, folks have been scrambling to dress up with the emotion they relate to the most. Also, like the Minions costume, Inside Out is the perfect group costume idea.
If you own a purple dress, you’ve pretty much got this one sorted. We’d suggest getting yourself a blue wig and sparing yourself the blue hair dye.
5. Pomni
Pomni is a cute little jester character that you might’ve seen your favourite cosplayer on TikTok take on. She is the main protagonist of an animated web series called The Amazing Digital Circus.
According to the spooky data site, “pomni costume” searches reached an all-time high in 2024. Guess if we’re feeling like fools, we might as well dress up as a cute one, right?

SPOILER WARNING! You’ve been warned.
For folks who’ve yet to watch the highly anticipated sequel to Beetlejuice, Delores — played by Monica Bellucci — is Beetlejuice’s ex-wife!
She’s sassy, she’s gorgeous and she’s the perfect character to dress up as if you have an old Morticia Addams outfit hanging in the closet.
Frightgeist reckons Delores will be a hit after the search for “fake staples” became a breakout search when the movie dropped.
This one’s also easy to pull from our wardrobe, so we recommend getting yourself a decent costume makeup palette and watching a bunch of YouTube makeup tuts.
3. Catnap
Babe, I have no clue who this is or what it is, but with a quick Google search, it appears to be some kind of villain of the Poppy Playtime universe — a horror game popular with the kiddos.
While searching for a “Catnap” costume, I did get the fright of my life, though, because some people have taken it to the extreme and bought stilts to imitate that villain’s seedy hunch.
We reckon a purple bodysuit and a creepy as hell face mask should be passable as a costume for this one.
2. Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn
Australian Olympic breaker Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn made waves during the Paris 2024 games for her ~ unique ~ moves. Following her stint at the Olympic Games, Raygunn quickly became the subject of online memes and was even parodied on Jimmy Fallon‘s show.
Per the Halloween costume data website, folks are gearing up to dress up as the Olympian, as people are searching up “raygun costume”, “green and yellow tracksuit” and “green track pants”.
Hopefully this gets people dancing at the spooky gathos!
