Payton Pritchard looks ready to take the next step for the Celtics after brilliant preseason debut

The Celtics lost key depth pieces this summer and will need other players, like Payton Pritchard, to step up in a big way.

Pritchard, 25, was selected in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft but has mostly found himself on the fringes of the rotation in Boston over the course of his first three professional seasons. That could soon change, however, and he looks ready for the moment.

The former Oregon guard signed a four-year, $30 million extension with the Celtics this past weekend. He then scored a game-high 26 points in Boston’s preseason opener, single-handedly outscoring the Philadelphia 76ers during the final seven minutes of the game.

Pritchard looked comfortable and confident as the primary ball handler in pick-and-roll sets, scoring efficiently (including this crazy 4-point play) and rarely turning the ball over.

He also impressed as a passer and playmaker, adding four assists during the contest as well. The guard created separation with beautiful dribble moves and stepback jumpers and eventually, he even heard “MVP” chants at the free-throw line.

It was an outstanding performance for Pritchard, who projects well as a leader on the bench unit for Boston.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla described Pritchard as “one of his favorite people” during his postgame media availability. Overall, it seems that the guard is ready to take the next step in the NBA.

Boston’s backcourt looks strong with Jrue Holiday and Derrick White. But the Celtics could benefit from a strong campaign from Pritchard in the second unit as someone who can create his own basket.
