Paying off student loans? Deduct up to $2,500 in interest on your 2026 return, but watch the income limits that could cut it off early

Paying student loan interest in 2026 could still give you a useful tax break, but the benefit has a clear ceiling. The student loan interest deduction remains capped at $2,500 a year , and your income can reduce or eliminate the deduction before you reach that limit.

The key point is that this deduction is tied to interest paid , not the amount of student debt you repay. Paying $8,000 toward your loan does not mean you can deduct $8,000. Only the qualifying interest portion counts.
