Paul Scholes gives verdict on Leandro Trossard transfer and Arsenal's ideal scenario

Paul Scholes thinks Arsenal have landed a real gem in Leandro Trossard after he impressed off the bench in their 3-2 comeback win over Manchester United on Sunday.

The 28-year-old came on in the dying stages at the Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta's side went in search of a winner. With the scores level, Trossard replaced Gabriel Martinelli and posed a different threat on the left-wing with his pace and trickery.

He made an instant impact as he was involved in the build-up to Eddie Nketiah's late winner. His pass found Oleksandr Zinchenko on the overlap who pulled the ball across to Martin Odegaard and the Norwegian's cross-cum-shot was tapped home by Nketiah from close-range.

It was just what boss Arteta has brought Trossard into his squad for, and former United midfielder Scholes feels the Belgian will be a "great signing" for the Gunners as they charge towards the Premier League title.

"When you are going for titles, you need strong squads, you need players who can come in and replace players," Scholes told Premier League Productions. "Those players that come in might not always be as good as the starters, but they might even be better from the bench.

"When Leandro Trossard came on for Gabriel Martinelli, I didn't think it weakened Arsenal, it really didn't. So I think Trossard is a great signing. Two or three more would really boost this team to go on and win the Premier League."

Trossard completed his £27million switch from Brighton on Friday after falling out with Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi. His arrival helped soften the blow for Arsenal after they missed out on top target Mykhaylo Mudryk, who was snapped up by Chelsea for £87m.

Ex-Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas also praised Trossard for his cameo from the bench, telling Sky Sports: "I think Trossard is a really good player, better than at the moment what people think he is.

"He showed it at Brighton and he showed it today for a couple of minutes. He’s different to what they’ve got. He plays between the lines, he can score goals, play in different positions up front."

Arsenal have already moved to snap up another new signing in Polish defender Jakub Kiwior from Italian club Spezia. The 22-year-old was watching on from the stands during Sunday's victory and his £21m switch was confirmed the following day.

Arteta could yet welcome further additions before the January window is out. The Gunners are reportedly in talks with Real Valladolid defender Ivan Fresneda. The 18-year-old has attracted interest from across Europe with Arsenal currently battling Borussia Dortmund for his signature.
