Paul O'Grady's heartwarming final TV appearance just months before 'unexpected' death

Paul O'Grady 's final big TV appearance saw him team up with a Royal guest, as they shared their love of dogs in December 2022.

Sadly this was to be Paul's last known TV appearance, with it announced on Wednesday 29 March that he had died aged 67 on Tuesday evening.

The comedian and TV host was known for presenting shows such as The Paul O’Grady Show, For the Love of Dogs, and Blankety Blank, which he hosted as his drag act, Lily Savage.

Fans and friends of the star have paid tribute to the TV favourite, while his husband, Andre Portasio, described his passing as “unexpected but peaceful”.

The star's final big TV appearance came in December 2022, as he filmed a special episode of his hit show For the Love of Dogs.

Paul teamed up with The Queen Consort Camilla in the episode that aired in December, while it was filmed earlier on in the year when she was still the Duchess of Cornwall.

The comedian met with the Royal at Clarence House as they celebrated the 160th anniversary of Battersea Dogs Home.

Paul was an ambassador for the animal shelter, and his TV series followed the lives of some of the adorable pooches who were there waiting to be homed.

From harrowing stories of abused pets, to dogs whose owners could no longer care for them, the stories of the pets who featured on the programme certainly pulled on the heart strings of viewers, and host Paul.

Paul was often seen cuddling a rescue dog or two during some of their most difficult moments, while the TV series also followed the journey of the animals that were rehomed.

In December, Paul and Camilla united to celebrate the shelter and its work over the past 100 plus years, and in light of the coronavirus pandemic that saw the shelter face one of its busiest periods.

At the time of filming, Camilla and Paul searched for new ways to comfort and assist the dogs with their unique needs.

This included teaching a blind dog to figure out his path through an area, to reassuring nervous and neglected dogs that they are safe and loved.

After their work at the shelter, Paul also took some dogs to Clarence House, where Camilla held a garden party with her esteemed friends.

The party was held with the hope that these animals would be rescued and would find their forever home with new owners, such as Reggie, an eight-year-old giant Schnauzer who had a life-threatening gastric issue.

Paul did make another small TV appearance following this in 2023, on January 5, as he commented on his close friend Sally Lindsay's TV career in a special episode called Sally Lindsay in Her Own Words.

Prior to this, Paul appeared on The Chase star Paul Sinha's TV Showdown in early 2022.

Paul's heartwarming series Paul O'Grady 's For the Love of Dogs is available to watch now on ITVX.
