Paul Merson questions Newcastle's January transfer signings and makes Jesse Lingard claim

Paul Merson does not believe Newcastle United made any 'breathtaking' signings in the January transfer window.

The Magpies confirmed the deadline-day arrivals on Dan Burn and Matt Targett, and failed in approaches for Hugo Ekitike and Jesse Lingard.

United's late defensive arrivals followed earlier deals for Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Eddie Howe's side do not return to action until February 8 in a crucial midweek clash with Everton, and remain a point adrift of safety.

Merson believes a loan move for Lingard would have elevated the club's business, and singled out the deals for Targett and Wood for scrutiny.

Asked if Newcastle's January business was a hit, Merson told Sky Sports News: "I could only say hit if they stay up, honestly.

"None of them are like signings that are breathtaking. If you put Jesse Lingard up there I’d go, ‘wow.’

"Chris Wood [has been] playing down at the lower parts of the Premier League.

"Targett, is steady but he played behind Jack Grealish for the last two or three years that maybe made him a better player.

"I’m not sure, but they’ve given themselves a chance."
