Paul Merson picks out 'forgotten' Arsenal star for huge praise amid Premier League title charge

Paul Merson has named the Arsenal star he thinks many have been forgotten about in the Gunners' Premier League title charge. Mikel Arteta's men are four points off leaders Manchester City after their win against Leeds with a victory over Newcastle essential to keep up with the reigning champions.

Because of their excellent 2022/23 campaign, Merson named four Arsenal stars as part of his team of the season. William Saliba, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were three expected inclusions due to their huge roles in the Gunners' impressive season.

However, the Arsenal legend handed another spot in his starting XI to Aaron Ramsdale with his reasons clear despite the shot-stopper being heavily criticised in recent weeks.

Merson wrote on Give Me Sport: "People forget how many great saves he’s made along the way. During the season he has made big saves to keep Arsenal in games. I think he’s been outstanding.

"Later on in the season, he’s made a couple of mistakes but overall, you’ve got to say he’s been absolutely brilliant. He won’t be taking Jordan Pickford’s place as England No 1 while Gareth Southgate is in charge though!"

Ramsdale is fourth in the Premier League clean sheet rankings with 12, behind only Nick Pope, Allison and David de Gea. While some criticism has been thrown his way for moments of madness against Southampton and West Ham, had it not been for the 24-year-old's fantastic display at Anfield against Liverpool, Arsenal's title hopes may have already diminished.

However, they are still well within a shout of finishing top of the league and Ramsdale will need to be his best on Tyneside to prevent the free-scoring Magpies from finding the back of the net on Sunday.
