Paul Merson makes major Everton relegation prediction before Crystal Palace

Former England international forward Paul Merson has backed Everton to avoid relegation this season.

The Toffees are down in 16th in the Premier League, although both Burnley and Leeds United are within striking distance going into the final few days of the campaign.

Everton need three points to guarantee survival and they missed an opportunity to secure them on Sunday, losing 3-2 at home to Brentford. However, they have another chance on Thursday at home to Crystal Palace and then away at Arsenal on the final day.

Burnley, who are currently in 18th position, are also in action on Thursday at Aston Villa before they host Newcastle United on Sunday. Leeds will travel to Brentford and if they don't win in the capital then the Toffees will be safe regardless of their results.

Despite the nerves felt around Goodison Park by supporters, Merson thinks the Toffees have got enough in the tank to get over the line.

"I think Everton will be alright, I've seen enough from them to get something out of the next two games," he said in his Sky Sports column.

"They have to get something out of Crystal Palace at home and I can see that happening. Even then, you'd have to ask Burnley and Leeds to win their football matches which is a big ask, especially on the last day of the season."

Merson also said he expects Burnley to be the team that drops to the Championship, that despite the fact the Clarets are playing two sides with little to play for on the final day.

"If I had to pick which camp I'd rather be in out of the relegation candidates, it'd be Leeds because of that point against Brighton - one that I think will keep them up.

"I was covering their game on Sunday and Pascal Struijk's late equaliser was a massive goal for them. They were out of it in the first half and Brighton were a much better team.

"On Thursday, Burnley go to Aston Villa who are playing their last home game of the season. You've got to give the fans optimism on the last home game so Villa will be the biggest triers in the world on Thursday night.

"Steven Gerrard will not want 40,000 people leaving that ground with the attitude of next season. He will want to send those fans away with the feeling that they'll buy a new season ticket with the thought of Gerrard turning things around. That only happens if they beat Burnley."
