Paul Hartley dealt further blow after former Celtic star's sacking with 'not surprised' claim

A Hartlepool United player has brutally claimed he's not stunned to see former Celtic and Hearts midfielder Paul Hartley sacked by the club.

It's been a bruising few days for the ex- Scotland international, who has been relieved of his duties at the English League Two club. He only took the reins at the club in the summer following a spell at Scottish Championship side Cove Rangers.

Club chairman Raj Singh claimed in the aftermath of the sacking which took place 10 games into the league season that he didn't know who former Celtic player Hartley was prior to appointing him. Hartlepool are yet to win a match and a current star player has added insult to injury.

Midfielder Mark Shelton says players have to shoulder some of the responsibility but overall he's not shocked to see his relatively new manager walk out the door. He told Hartlepool Mail : I’m not really [surprised]. Personally it was frustrating.

"But for all the lads it’s frustrating not winning games. You can’t put that down to just the manager. We’re a group of players, staff and a team.

“You can’t just say it was the manager's fault but, at the end of the day, it lies on the manager's head. He wasn’t winning games.

"We weren’t winning games, so there’s got to be a change and it was probably the final straw. I think we were ready for a change and we’re looking forward to the future now.”
