Patrick Mahomes is so good at making something out of nothing, he might even bend the rules to make it happen. In Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, that meant completing a pass to one of his offensive linemen.
While scrambling in the pocket waiting for someone to get open and the Jaguars bearing down on him, Mahomes zipped the ball to the closest white jersey he could find. Unfortunately for him, that was left tackle Donovan Smith, who was not an eligible receiver on the play.
Smith impressively caught the short laser, but the Chiefs were flagged for illegal touching.
Patrick Mahomes to Donovan Smith LMAOOOOO! It was an illegal touching penalty but the Jags declined it so the big fella adds a catch to his stats 🤣🤣 https://t.co/cJC5Pajixi pic.twitter.com/Yn4ggaCqLz

The funniest part of this might be Smith’s reaction after the catch. He had absolutely no clue what to do with the ball and ended up getting tackled almost immediately.
Because the third-down play didn’t result in a first down, the Jaguars actually declined the penalty. But I’m not sure that means Smith gets to keep a reception in the box score. As I’m writing this, he’s officially credited with a target but no catches.
