Patience shown despite work on major road in Gedling causing issues for residents and crematorium

Works at a busy junction in Nottinghamshire has caused disruptions to motorists and visitors to Gedling Crematorium, but residents are remaining patient.

Severn Trent Water is carrying out works at the junction between Mapperley Plains and Catfoot Lane, which closed from Monday, January 24.

A water pipe is being moved and, due to the nature of the work, local businesses will have close.

Marion Wallbanks, 64, who lives next to the roadworks, says it has even had a positive impact on her.

She said: "It has helped us as we can get out of the property easier as traffic is a lot slower.

"Luckily we can't hear the roadworks, we hope they're finished soon, but it isn't the end of the world."

Graham Nicohlls, 74, retired, of Middlebeck Drive, concedes the works are an inconvenience but think it is for the best.

He said: "I've lived here for 17 years and it is an inconvenience but we've got to be tolerant.

"There are other roads we can use and if it's essential work then it makes sense.

"As residents we can work around it and be patient."

A spokeperson for Gedling Crematorium said they had notified funeral directors to advise of the diversions.

"We have updated our social media page and website to share this news with as many of our visitors as possible," they said.

"We have also contacted the project manager for the works to request they install signage alongside the diversion signs advising that business, such as ourselves, remain open during this time and are accessible via alternative routes.

"Access to the Crematorium can be made via Catfoot Lane through Lambley Village and this is adding approximately 10 minutes to journey times. We recommend extra time for travelling when visiting the Crematorium. Pedestrian access is still available at both ends of Catfoot Lane."

A Severn Trent spokesperson said : "Our teams are carrying out essential work on our network, moving a water pipe to accommodate works needed by a housing development on Catfoot Lane.

"To keep everyone safe, we are having to close a section of the road, but will be doing everything we can to complete work and reopen the road as quickly as possible. We're really sorry for the disruption this may cause, we have worked with the council on this closure as we're working collaboratively with the housing developer and other utilities who will be using the closure at the same time in an effort to reduce any further disruption, preventing the need to close the road again.

"We've been in contact with all local businesses in the area to keep them updated, including the crematorium where access will be available at all times, but again, we're really sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. We also want to thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding while we complete this vital work.”
