Parents' anger at Leeds school closures due to heavy snow as hundreds of kids told to stay at home

Parents in Leeds are expressing their anger after hundreds of pupils have been told to stay home due to adverse weather.

A number of schools across Leeds have closed due to the severe weather conditions with parents complaining of having to find last-minute child care. Amber and yellow weather warnings are in place in Leeds and across Yorkshire, with significant disruption expected until Friday morning.

With the snow expected to get worse throughout the day, a number of schools and colleges closed early today, with some also announcing they would be closed on Friday. Leeds City Council published a list of all the known closures, and some schools were contacting parents via text directly.

Many schools closed between 1pm and 2pm to allow staff, pupils and parents to travel home safely. Parents on social media have called out the closures, with many saying it's unnecessary to shut the schools.

One parent said: "When I was at high-school they didn't give a f*** if there was a hurricane, it's not even that bad right now." Tracy commented: "It's ridiculous it's only a bit of snow roads are fine and buses are still going whats the problem."

Carl said: "Back when I went to John Smeaton my class was a old porter cabin with no heating but can’t remember it ever closing for a snow flake snow." Richard added: "Snow hasn't even settled! Any excuse for time off!"

Lesley said: "Laughable, my daughter lives & works as a school secretary in Canada & even though temperatures can drop to ( ~ 25 ) school remain open & traffic still runs!" Rachael commented: "how to send a text out to people telling them it's closed and didn't go to work for 6...should show my work this."

However, not everyone was annoyed by the decision as some parents agreed with the closures.

Heather said: "So people can get home safely before it all goes pear shaped, buses and trains might stop running and traffic will be horrendous later if it starts to settle."

"Good on them, so they can get home safely to their families, do people forget that have families too and want to get home early. Least the school is thinking of their health and safety for the people saying why." Victoria added.

Janine said: "To be honest - schools can’t win - if they close they get slated, if they don’t they will also get slated, they need to ensure students and staff are safe."
