The Carolina Panthers made a handful of moves official on Tuesday morning—which included sending yet another linebacker, Chandler Wooten, to injured reserve. So, they had an open spot to fill.
That spot, as announced by the team, now goes to tight end Jordan Matthews—who has been signed from the practice squad.
Matthews, a standout at Vanderbilt University, broke into the NFL as a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2014. It’d be there, in his final season with the franchise in 2016, where he’d cross paths with current Panthers head coach Frank Reich—who was in his first year as the Eagles offensive coordinator.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has amassed eight pro seasons—picking up additional stops with the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers. He’s recorded 274 receptions for 3,288 yards and 22 touchdowns over 76 games.
To fill Matthews’ vacancy on the practice squad, the Panthers have brought back linebacker Ayinde “Ace” Eley—who spent the summer with the team as an undrafted free-agent signee.
