Panthers add 2 players to practice squad on Wednesday

The Carolina Panthers kept busy after a flurry of activity on Tuesday.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the team has signed two familiar faces to its practice squad this morning—quarterback Jake Luton and tight end Jordan Matthews. Luton had already spent the early portions of the season on the squad while Matthews was brought in for a tryout during mandatory minicamp in June.

The 27-year-old passer returns after a brief detour to New Orleans. Luton was signed away to the Saints’ active roster back on Sept. 26 and then released three weeks later.

Luton appeared in two of Carolina’s three preseason outings this past summer. He completed eight of his 19 attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Matthews, a former second-round pick and former wide receiver, has played eight seasons in the NFL—having recorded 274 receptions for 3,288 yards and 22 touchdowns over 76 games. He spent one of those seasons (2016) under Panthers head coach Frank Reich, who was the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator at the time.
