Paddy Power shares hilarious skit of 'Tommy Tiernan' ahead of Comedy Festival return

Tommy Tiernan is set to take centre stage on Thursday night as the Paddy Power Comedy Festival kicks off.

The festival takes place at the Iveagh Gardens until Sunday.

In a bid to promote the festival, Paddy Power has released a hilarious sketch of what would happen if today’s Tommy Tiernan met Tommy Tiernan of yester-year.

Master mimic Conor ‘Sketches’ Moore has ripped off Ireland’s king of comedy and well-known RTE presenter ahead of the Paddy Power Comedy Festival – bringing Tiernan, face-to-face with himself (from 2016) in a skit that has gone viral on social media in recent days.

When ‘old Tommy’ finds himself opposite his future self, he asks ‘new Tommy’ why he’s so serious.

He responds: “You do know, things are about to get seriously miserable in the next few years in this country?

Old Tommy kicks back: “But we’re Irish. We’re not happy unless we’re miserable. That’s how we’re supposed to be!”

However, new Tommy breaks the news to him that in the intervening years between 2016 and the present, Britain will leave the EU, there will be a global pandemic, and all of the life-altering restrictions that came with it, there will be war in Europe, rising inflation and fuel prices, and worse, that we would lose Fungie the dolphin and lose to Luxembourg in the football.

But the final blow is delivered when new Tommy reveals to his past self that he will lose his hair, sending ‘Tiernan’ into a state of comical despair.

“Mother of Jaysus! I was full sure it was going to grow back in the summer!” old Tommy reacts.

The Comedy Festival returns for the first time since 2019, and it promises to be bigger, better and most definitely greener than ever before.

Over 90 artists will perform across two evening shows daily, with an additional matinee on Saturday, culminating in a total of 50 hours of laughter across four fully seated stages from July 21-24.
