Packers sign rookie LB Christian Young to practice squad

The Green Bay Packers filled their open spot on the practice squad by signing rookie linebacker Christian Young, an undrafted free agent out of Arizona. The team announced the move on Tuesday.

The Packers had an open spot after placing left tackle David Bakhtiari on injured reserve and promoting linebacker Kristian Welch from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Young (6-1, 221) spent time with the Seattle Seahawks during training camp. He went undrafted in the 2023 draft.

A strong safety who played in the box in college, Young transitioned to linebacker to start his NFL career. He could be a hybrid player to develop for the Packers and a possible replacement for Tariq Carpenter, who played several roles on special teams for Rich Bisaccia as a rookie.

Over five seasons at Arizona, Young played in 48 games and was on the field for over 2,000 snaps. He also got over 400 special teams snaps. Young produced 182 total tackles (9.0 for loss), 11 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

During the preseason with Seattle, Young played 61 snaps and made three tackles (one stop), per PFF.

Brennen Rupp of Packers Wire spoke to Young before the 2023 NFL draft. He talked about playing in the box, tackling and his willingness to play on special teams.
