The Green Bay Packers brought back wide receiver Bo Melton and running back James Robinson on the practice squad on Wednesday. Both Melton and Robinson were signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster last Wednesday, were active against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day and then released Monday.
Melton, now in his second season in Green Bay, spent the first 11 weeks on the practice squad. Robinson was signed in October to provide depth at the running back position while Aaron Jones worked through injuries.
Melton played two snaps on offense and six more on special teams during the Packers’ 29-22 win over the Lions. Robinson was active but did not play a snap.
Melton should continue as the team’s No. 7 wide receiver option. Robinson is an emergency option behind Jones, who is still out with a knee injury, and A.J. Dillon, who is nursing a groin injury.
The week of transactions for both players was necessary as the Packers worked through a difficult injury situation leading into Week 12. Allowed to elevate only two players from the practice squad but shorthanded at multiple positions, the Packers were forced to sign Melton and Robinson to the active roster while elevating tight end/fullback Henry Pearson and safety Benny Sapp III.
The Packers still have two open spots on the 53-man roster after releasing Melton and Robinson on Monday. The roster spots are expected to go to safety Darnell Savage and cornerback Eric Stokes, who need to be officially activated from injured reserve.
