An investigative journalist is being hailed as "irreplaceable" and a "pillar of the Pacific media community" after his death.

Vanuatu-based Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) editor Dan McGarry died in Brisbane on Wednesday, aged 62.
