Ozempic face to Ozempic butt; how weight loss drugs affect the body

Drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy with their promise to fight obesity effectively with around 15 to 20 per cent weight loss in its users, have been the talk of town ever since their launch in 2017 and 2021 respectively.

Generically known as semaglutide, this revolutionary drug has been found to be effective in controlling obesity, diabetes and a range of chronic diseases, which proves its effectiveness in tackling many health challenges beyond diabetes and obesity. According to studies, such GLP-1 medications reduce risk of heart attack, stroke, substance use, colorectal cancer, and Alzheimer's disease among others.

However, the side effects of these drugs should not be overlooked when it comes to their long-term use. Semaglutide helps people shed pounds by reducing their appetite, which leads to the food staying in stomach for a longer period. Mimicking the effects of the naturally occurring hormone in the body called GLP-1, it aids managing blood sugar and slowing down stomach emptying. This could lead to a condition called pulmonary aspiration which can cause lung infection and even prove fatal.

The effects of rapid weight loss on body, skin and overall appearance have also been highlighted by experts. Sudden weight loss can lead to conditions like Ozempic face, Ozempic butt, and Ozempic breasts among others. Sharon Osbourne shared her thoughts on how Ozempic made her feel 'too gaunt'.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that skin reactions were reported in fewer than 10% of patients who received Ozempic.
