Turns out the Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S is proving popular. Really popular. So much so that Nikon Japan has had to temporarily suspend orders.
That’s according to a report by Nikon Rumors, which published correspondence – supposedly from the Big N – citing an “overwhelming number of pre-orders (...) which far exceeds our expectations.”
Obviously the big question mark over all of this is, why the Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S? And why now?
As Nikon Rumors rightly points out, retailers appear to have stock and this isn’t even a new lens. It was announced all the way back in 2023!
Apparently, the suspension has been active since August 08, but there appears to be no word as to when orders will resume. Although, naturally, the statement does stress that orders will be fulfilled as quickly as possible.
Now, this is pure conjecture from yours truly… but I couldn’t help but think back to a recent report from the same rumor outlet, highlighting evidence claiming that Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8 units were being manufactured in Vietnam – a lens that was otherwise manufactured in China.
I’m well aware that this is one heck of a swing, but I cannot help but wonder: could Nikon’s struggle to fulfill orders of the Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S be linked to something similar?
Of course, the other option is that people have suddenly realized what an incredibly good lens this comparatively lightweight supertelephoto prime really is.
