Over 800 men incarcerated at a prison in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, were recently evacuated to other facilities due to prolonged delays in water and power restoration efforts. This decision was made in response to the challenging circumstances faced by the prison, which made it necessary to transfer the inmates to seven different prisons both within and outside of North Carolina.
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction issued a news release confirming the evacuation and stated that an online offender locator will be updated within 24 hours to provide information on the temporary locations of each relocated individual. However, the department did not provide a specific timeline for how long the inmates will remain at these temporary facilities.
In addition to the evacuation of the male inmates, more than 400 women were also relocated from two prisons in western North Carolina on Monday. This move was prompted by damage to the water and power infrastructure at the facilities, further underscoring the challenges faced by correctional institutions in the aftermath of the recent events.
As the situation continues to unfold, authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by these evacuations. The coordination of efforts to manage the relocation process and provide necessary support to the inmates remains a top priority for the Department of Adult Correction.
